Mortimer Jordan boys cross country coach Shayne Carnes almost saw his nine-race regular-season winning streak fall Tuesday — to his predecessor, Mike Dutton, who came out of retirement to coach at Hayden.
“Yeah, it’s good to see Coach Dutton back. He was getting tired of bingo down at the Morris Senior Center,” Carnes joked before the race at Pinson Valley.
It was all in jest, but the finish was a little closer than what Carnes would have liked. Still, it was the Blue Devils’ second straight win in as many meets so far this year.
Barrett Bradford led the Devils with a time of 20:18. Jordan and Hayden each placed four runners in the top 10.
In the girls division, Hayden easily bested the five-school field, with five runners in the top 10. Shades Valley’s Ryan Spahn (22:50) won, with Hayden’s Krista Stricklin second and Mallory Ray third.
“They’ve been working on getting ready for a month,” Wildcat coach John Simmons said. “They’ve just wanted to get out and race.”
Both the Devils boys and Hayden girls won a race last Thursday at Mortimer Jordan.
