The North Jefferson News

Most local public schools held the final tune-ups for the regular season last week, though several had to fight the elements to do it, and one school finally gave up after two tries.

Gardendale 14, Hewitt-Trussville 6:Ja'Michael Willis caught a 70-yard pass from Dallas Tidwell on a trick play, then took a direct snap from center and ran 60 yards for another score in a two-period varsity scrimmage at Trussville on Friday.

Mortimer Jordan 0, Pinson Valley 0: In a two-period scrimmage that was postponed from Friday night to Saturday because of torrential storms, the Blue Devils had a touchdown pass nullified because it was caught by an ineligible receiver. Later in the same series, Caleb Harper's field goal attempt sailed wide right on a tight angle. Jordan's defense kept Pinson from mounting any significant threat, however.

Lawrence County 35, Hayden 14: In the night's only full-length scrimmage, quarterback Reese Butts scored two touchdowns, but both were late in the fourth quarter as the Red Devils had already mounted a five-touchdown lead. Nathan Williams also scored a safety for the Wildcats by tackling a Lawrence County running back in his own end zone.

Montevallo 21, Fultondale 12: Montevallo quarterback Kevin Callender ran for one touchdown and threw for two more, both caught by Brandon Lilly, in a jamboree that was postpooned from Thursday to Friday due to storms.

Vinemont at Corner, canceled: A jamboree game was scheduled for Thursday night but postponed until Friday because of severe thunderstorms. But Friday's weather proved no better, and Corner officials finally canceled the scrimmage outright.
