NORTH JEFFERSON — A sense of hope surrounds one area library, even in the wake of bad news for many Jefferson County libraries.

The North Jefferson-Blount Library Foundation raised $6,000 recently during a used book sale. The foundation is raising funds to convert the former National Guard armory on Cane Creek Road in Warrior into a new facility called the Regional Library at Warrior.

Anne Jolly, president of the library foundation, said work is progressing slowly on the project, but that plans are coming together

“We’re still moving forward; an inch at a time sometimes, but still forward,” Jolly said. “This library project is shovel-ready and will provide state-of-the-art library services to residents of north Jefferson and west Blount counties.”

It was announced recently that the Jefferson County Library Cooperative (JCLC), which includes the Warrior, Gardendale and Fultondale public libraries, will receive budget cuts.

The cooperative had received the bulk of its funding from the Jefferson County Commission for more than 30 years, but the commission is reducing the cooperative’s budget by half — from $1 million to $500,000.

JCLC encompasses 21 library systems, totaling 39 libraries.

A book seller in Vinemont is doing her part to help the regional library project.

Cheryl’s Books, an online book seller, is hosting a book sale on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with all proceeds going to the Regional Library at Warrior project.

There will be 10,000 books for sale for $1 each, in addition to collectibles, toys, cabinets and other items for sale.

The sale is at 1250 County Road 1343 in Vinemont.

The library foundation is also taking donations of used books that are in good condition. Members will accept fiction, nonfiction, paperback and hardback books, as well as used text books. No magazines will be accepted.

To donate books to the library foundation, call Jolly at (205) 590-4909.
