FULTONDALE — The Fultondale City Council passed a number of measures on Monday with a larger goal in mind: Revitalizing U.S. Hwy. 31 through the city.
The council authorized Mayor Jim Lowery to execute documents necessary to accept a donation of eight acres above Winn-Dixie from Quail Run LLC. The property is at 1905 New Castle Road. Lowery said the city is still considering building a new library and tennis courts on the property.
In addition, the council passed a 120-day moratorium on issuing business licenses for vehicle repair garage businesses in the city.
“The consensus is that we do not want automobiles being worked on outside,” Lowery said. “We’re really trying to improve the looks of the area.”
The council also put into place a 120-day moratorium on issuing business licenses to peddlers. Lowery said it is unfair for business owners to invest into a building and pay taxes, and to then have a peddler set up in front of their store to sell the same items.
“We want to make sure we’re supporting the businesses there and not let them be unfairly treated,” Lowery said.
During the moratorium, the city’s planning commission and city council will review and perhaps revise both zoning ordinances.
